Luke Scott Makes #5 of the Best Designated Hitters of 2010
There are only nine everyday DH’s in the American League. DH is a position and will not be left out. Out of the nine DH’s, five of them really stand out as premier hitters that are contributing to their team in a big way.
5. Luke Scott, Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles are yet again having a horrible year. The Orioles have the worst record in baseball and are 24 games behind the first place Yankees. Scott is the Orioles everyday DH and is putting up decent numbers. Scott is hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI’s. Scott’s RBI numbers are low, but that isn’t his fault. If Scott was playing on a winning team his RBI numbers would probably be close to 50. Scott is playing like a normal DH does, he’s hitting for a low average and has decent power numbers, Scott is leading the team in slugging- .495, exactly what a DH is supposed to do.
Thanks to the Orioles awful pitching, people like Scott and his teammates, Nick Markakis, and Ty Wigginton who are all having good years, aren’t being recognized.

Did Miguel Tejada Take Steroids in 2004?
I took a look back at the year 2004 and discovered many players who were only average players really stepped up their offense that year. Then there are other players who were already good and had a spectacular year in 2004. The players that I came up with that stood out the most in 2004 are a little fishy to me. Is their production up that year by natural talent or was it a product of the steroid era?
Miguel Tejada: Tejada already had the reputation of an all-star player in 2004 averaging 30 home runs and 100 RBI’s from 1998-2003. Once again Tejada had his best year in 2004 when he hit 34 home runs and had 150 RBI’s. From 2005 on, Tejada went into a steady decline and that trend is still continuing today.

Melvin Mora: Mora was in his fifth full season and only averaged about 15 home runs a season and 50 RBI’s. In 2004 Mora hit 27 home runs and 104 RBI’s. In 2005 Mora had similar numbers, but from 2006 on he only averaged about 17 home runs and 65 RBI’s. 2004 is still Mora’s best season.

Is Dave Trembley In Trouble After Orioles Slow Start?
While many people did not believe that the Orioles were playoff contenders this season, most thought they would at least be an improved team. It was believed that their young core should be one season close to competing for a playoff spot, but by the early looks of things, this does not appear to be the case. The Orioles have sputtered out of the gate, with an American League worst 2-12 record, and their early struggles have brought manager Dave Trembley’s immediate future into question. Trembley is my early pick for first manager to get fired and as of now it would be a shock if he made it to Memorial Day.
To be blunt, the Orioles should be playing better baseball. They have a lineup full of good hitters, highlighted by Matt Wieters, Nick Markakais, and Adam Jones, and a core of decent starting pitchers with Brian Matusz and Kevin Millwood. Much of their early season struggles can be blamed on their inability to hit with runners in scoring position and struggles in the bullpen, most notably Mike Gonzalez whose ERA is a shade below 20. There is enough talent on the roster to salvage the season and play competitive games into the summer, but if they do not turn it around soon, one has to wonder if Dave Trembley will be in charge.

Orioles fans’ grounds for optimism
For a dozen consecutive seasons, the Orioles have offered more of the same to a frustrated fan base: high-paid veterans and lightly regarded youngsters fighting and failing in the ultracompetitive American League East.
As the Orioles’ season opens today in St. Petersburg, Fla., and kicks off at home Friday at Camden Yards, most national prognosticators don’t give the club much chance to rise above fourth, which would be a step up from the fifth-place basement in 2009.
Yet in talking to fans, management and players, there’s a slightly different feeling this year – that the optimism that exists every spring has a little more merit. For the first time in recent memory, the Orioles have a young core with major league baseball experience.
“The years in the past, we’ve been waiting to get the guys up here. We’ve been mixing and matching guys here and there,” said Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis, 26. “I think we’re at the point now where it’s about winning.”
